Why does Kijkduin work well with young children?
Kijkduin's whole built-up centre is compact: the boulevard sits on top of the dune, Deltaplein is directly behind it, and the beach is reached via one of five numbered access points, strandslagen 3, 4A, 4B, 4C and 5. That means short walking distances between your hotel, food, and the sand, without needing a car for anything once you've arrived.
What is there for kids to actually look at?
The Jutterskeet van Ome Jan, also known as the Strandjuttersmuseum, sits at strandslag 5 and is decorated with items washed up on the beach: a beachcombing museum rather than a conventional one, and a natural stop for children curious about what the sea brings in.
In neighbouring Westduinpark, Scottish Highland cattle graze freely to help keep the dune landscape open, and their paths can cross the walking and cycling routes through the park: a genuine, if unpredictable, animal encounter rather than a fenced-off attraction. Is Kijkduin's beach and dune area safe to explore with kids?
The dune paths in and around Kijkduin are walkable and well used by families, cyclists and dog walkers. If your day includes the Sand Engine to the north, read the Sand Engine safety notes first: the tidal channel into its bay carries real risk on the incoming tide, and that's worth knowing before children go anywhere near the water there.
What if we're not just visiting, but relocating?
Kijkduin is home to the campus of the International School of The Hague, part of Stichting Het Rijnlands Lyceum: worth knowing if you're considering the area for an international relocation rather than a beach holiday. The school sits within the same compact district described above, alongside the beach, boulevard and dune paths that make Kijkduin manageable with young children day to day.
Can you take a pushchair or buggy along Kijkduin's boulevard?
A pushchair or buggy works well along Kijkduin's boulevard, which is paved and mostly flat along the top of the dune. Reaching the beach itself means crossing sand from the nearest strandslag, where a pushchair is harder going; some visitors switch to carrying young children for that last stretch. Westduinpark's main paths are unpaved but generally firm enough for all-terrain buggies.
