The Sand Engine (Zandmotor)

One delivery of sand, one time, instead of trucks every five years. Here's how that decision was made, and what to know before you walk out to it.

What is the Sand Engine?

The Sand Engine (Zandmotor DeltaDuin) is an artificial sand peninsula built in 2011 off the coast near Ter Heijde, just north of Kijkduin, shaped like a strandhaak (a sand hook) with two further underwater sand additions nearby. It was commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat and the province of South Holland for coastal defence, and now forms part of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen.

The Delfland coast between Ter Heijde and Kijkduin has a relatively narrow natural beach and dune strip, which used to need regular sand top-ups to stay safe. Instead of repeating that every few years, engineers deposited one very large volume of sand and let currents, waves and wind spread it north along the coast, including onto the beach at Kijkduin.

Why is the Sand Engine also called DeltaDuin?

DeltaDuin is the Sand Engine's official name, chosen through a public naming competition after construction. Both names are used interchangeably: "Sand Engine" (Zandmotor) describes how the project works, feeding sand to the coast by natural currents, while DeltaDuin is the name given to the resulting landform itself. Dutch-language sources and signage on site tend to use Zandmotor most often.

Why was it built this way, instead of the usual sand top-up?

The Sand Engine follows a "building with nature" approach, promoted in the Netherlands since the 1980s by coastal engineer Ronald Waterman and inspired by Czech engineer J.N. Svašek. Delft coastal engineering professor Marcel Stive is regarded as the originator of the Sand Engine concept itself, which lets natural currents do the distribution work instead of repeated mechanical suppletion.

Contractor consortium Van Oord–Boskalis started work in January 2011 on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, dredging 21.5 million m³ of sand from elsewhere in the North Sea near the Solleveld nature reserve and pumping it ashore, mostly through temporary pipelines, using trailing suction hopper dredgers (sleephopperzuigers). The peninsula was substantially complete by late October 2011. At completion it extended about 1.5 km into the sea, was roughly 2 km wide at its base, and covered around 128 hectares. The name DeltaDuin came from a public naming competition.

How much did it cost and how long is it meant to last?

The Sand Engine cost €70 million to build. If it performs as designed, this stretch of coast should not need further sand suppletion until approximately 2031, roughly twenty years of natural redistribution from a single construction project, instead of a new dredging operation every five years.

Is it safe to walk or swim near the Sand Engine?

As of 2026, swimming around the Sand Engine is permitted and the usual sea-swimming risks apply, according to site manager Zuid-Hollands Landschap. The area is dynamic: sand shifts with currents, waves and wind, quicksand is marked with warning signs, and the organisation advises calling 112 if you get cut off by rising water. Restrictions have applied before and may return: always check the signage on site.

The tidal channel into the Sand Engine's bay can be waded at low tide, but a short, strong current can form in the channel as the tide comes in, and that current can dig unexpectedly deep holes in the sand, which is how people lose their footing. Walking around the lagoon instead of through the channel takes over half an hour. Rijkswaterstaat and the province monitor currents around the Sand Engine continuously and inform lifeguards and safety authorities when risks change; the general design guidance describes a longer outgoing tide and a shorter incoming one at this location, though we have not re-confirmed the exact hours for 2026: treat any specific figure as indicative, not a guarantee, and follow the signage and lifeguard instructions on the day.

What has grown there since 2011?

Coastal maintenance normally adds sand roughly every five years, which never gives ecosystems time to establish. Because the Sand Engine deposited about twenty years of sand supply at once, a more permanent ecosystem has been able to develop on land and in the water. The first vegetation, including sea rocket and sand couch grass, appeared as early as summer 2012, encouraging embryonic dune formation; a new dune ridge became increasingly visible from 2014 onward.

A lagoon of roughly eight to ten hectares and about two metres deep formed behind the peninsula after construction, mainly fed by groundwater and rainwater, intended to protect groundwater levels in the neighbouring Solleveld nature reserve. By 2021 this lagoon had become notably smaller, particularly its southern part, as it filled with sand; a second, separate pool formed after the northern side of the original lagoon became cut off from the sea. Shrimp are common in the water around the peninsula.

What can you do at the Sand Engine today?

Windsurfing, kitesurfing and wave surfing are all popular here. Kitesurfers mostly use the area around and just outside the entrance to the bay, while wave surfers tend to prefer the seaward north side, especially in south-westerly swell. A footpath, the Zandmotorpad, runs along the top of the new dune with sea views, and the Hague-side part of the Sand Engine is open to naturism.

Along the Zandmotorpad, sealed wells let fresh water infiltrate the dune, pushing salt seawater further offshore, part of how the site also supports drinking-water infrastructure, alongside recreation.

Has the Sand Engine always been open to the public?

The Sand Engine has been open to walkers since 24 November 2011, shortly after construction finished. A footpath, the Zandmotorpad, runs along the top of the new dune with sea views, and the area has stayed open ever since, alongside its coastal-defence function. Restrictions on swimming applied for a period after opening but were later lifted.
