The dune boulevard at Kijkduin, reached by bus or bike

Practical

Getting to Kijkduin

No tram, no metro: just a handful of buses, a bike, or a car. Here's the principle, not a timetable that expires next season.

In short
  • From central The Hague, HTM buses 24 and 26 run to Kijkduin year-round; line 23 runs in summer only.
  • Tram 12 plus bus 22 reach neighbouring Westduinpark.
  • Parking is available around the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan.
  • The Zandmotorpad cycle path connects Kijkduin to the Sand Engine along the coast.

How far is Kijkduin from The Hague city centre?

Kijkduin lies roughly 7 kilometres from The Hague's city centre, in the far west of the city near the border with Westland. There is no direct rail or tram link over that distance, so the practical route runs by HTM bus from Den Haag Centraal or Den Haag Hollands Spoor. Journey time depends on the specific bus connection and current timetable.

How do you get from Schiphol or Rotterdam The Hague Airport to Kijkduin?

From Schiphol Airport or Rotterdam The Hague Airport, travel by train to Den Haag Centraal or Den Haag Hollands Spoor first, then continue to Kijkduin by HTM bus. There is no direct airport-to-Kijkduin service; the practical route always runs through central The Hague.

Which bus lines go to Kijkduin?

HTM bus lines 24 and 26 serve Kijkduin year-round; line 23 runs in summer only. Lines 24 and 26 terminate near strandslag 3, close to Hoek van Hollandlaan. For neighbouring Westduinpark, tram line 12 combined with bus line 22 is the relevant connection. A seasonal steam tram also ran to Kijkduin until 1928.

Routes and timetables change between seasons and years, so we deliberately don't publish a fixed schedule here. Check current times and routes directly with HTM or 9292 before you travel.

Is there a direct train or tram to Kijkduin?

Kijkduin has no direct train or tram connection today; buses are the only public transport option. A steam tram once ran between Loosduinen and Kijkduin from 1888 to 1928, and plans for an electric tram or RandstadRail line have been proposed since, though none has been built. The practical route from central The Hague remains by HTM bus.

See the history of Kijkduin for the full story of the old steam tram line.

Is parking at Kijkduin free or paid?

Parking is available around the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan, where large car parks were laid out on both sides of the road as part of the coastal reinforcement completed in 1968. We don't publish current tariffs here, since they change; check with the municipality of The Hague for up-to-date parking rates before you drive.

Can you cycle to Kijkduin?

Yes. Kijkduin connects into the wider dune cycle network along the South Holland coast, including the Zandmotorpad, the cycle path running along the top of the new dune at the Sand Engine just north of Kijkduin, with sea views for its full length.

Do you need a car to visit Kijkduin?

You do not need a car to visit Kijkduin: HTM buses reach the district year-round, and a dedicated cycle path connects it to the Sand Engine and the wider coastal network. A car is useful mainly if you're combining Kijkduin with other coastal stops in one day, since parking is available near Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan for anyone who prefers to drive.
