What is the Duinenmars, and when does it happen?
The Duinenmars is an annual walking event held since 1952, typically on the first or second weekend of April, drawing more than 12,000 participants a year. It starts and finishes at the car park on the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan in Kijkduin. We don't publish a fixed date for the next edition here, since dates are set annually by the organiser: check duinenmars.nl directly.
Routes range from 5 to 40 km (5, 10, 15, 25 and 40 km), running mostly through the dunes roughly between Monster and Wassenaar. In Duindorp and Scheveningen, the routes leave the dunes to cross the harbour, continuing via Meijendel to Wassenaar. It's organised by Stichting Duinenmars, with strong ties to Scouting Nederland; the original initiative came from The Hague's Admiraal De Ruytergroep, originally to raise money for scouts with disabilities, and the event is run by volunteers.
Only the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted this pattern in recent memory: the 2020 edition was cancelled, 2021 was cancelled with an alternative online edition, and 2022 was moved to October.
Can you see the Scheveningen fireworks from Kijkduin?
The fireworks of Scheveningen's international fireworks festival are also visible from Kijkduin's beach, which makes Kijkduin a good alternative for anyone who wants to watch without the crowds of Scheveningen itself. We don't list specific dates for the festival here, since we found conflicting information on whether and when it runs in any given year; check directly with Scheveningen's own event listings before planning around it.
Who organises the Duinenmars?
Stichting Duinenmars organises the Duinenmars, and the walk is run largely by volunteers with close ties to Scouting Nederland. The Hague's Admiraal De Ruytergroep started the walk originally as a fundraiser for scouts with disabilities, and that scouting connection has remained part of the event ever since. See the things-to-do guide for other ways to spend a day in Kijkduin, or duinenmars.nl for the organisation's own information.
How long are the Duinenmars routes?
The Duinenmars covers routes from 5 to 40 km, run mostly through the dunes on a course roughly between Monster and Wassenaar. In Duindorp and Scheveningen, the route briefly leaves the dunes to cross the harbour before continuing via Meijendel toward Wassenaar. Much of the route passes through Westduinpark, just north of Kijkduin. Exact distance options can vary slightly by edition, so check duinenmars.nl for the current year's routes.
